Location
I took this in my house, my Master Bedroom which currently is my studio.Time
It was a night that was cold and boring. I had no children or husband to bother me so I decided to mess with the camera. I used my dark bedroom and a lamp. It would have been around 10 or 11 pm, usually when I come up with my crazy ideas.Lighting
I hate using flashes so I try not use them. I do like to experiment with other light sources. With this shot I wanted to mess with light and dark, the contrast is great. I used my dark bedroom with only a 40 watt, warm light, table lamp as the light source. I had the lamp on a shelf while I adjusted myself next to it.Equipment
My Sony A58 and Kit Lens with no flash and a 40 watt table lamp.Inspiration
Selfies, Scarves and Ninjas. I love, love, LOVE doing self portraits. I actually was doing this shoot for another challenge back in November 2016 for "Eyes." Other photographers inspired me to do my own take on my own eyes. I'm very partial towards them and if anyone asked me, I'd say I have the best eyes ever! (I'm not bias! lol) One thing led to another and I came up this shot. The whole ninja look wouldn't come across in color so I turned this shot into a Black and White. I love it. If it wasn't for this community, I think I would have been stuck in limbo with my photography and creativity. Thank you to everyone in this community. Everyone here is so talented and amazing.Editing
Besides changing this photograph black and white and putting a bit vignette on the left side to emphasize the contrast, I did not do much else.In my camera bag
Sony camera - I love my Sony A58. Usually the kit lens 70-200mm and I have a few Minolta lenses too. My 50mm Minolta Prime lens is my new addition.Feedback
Experiment with light and dark. Use different textured scarves and wrap around the model's head, or your head. For this shot I used a soft cotton knit scarf in a light color, light green actually. Since I knew I was turning this photograph to B&W I didn't mind the scarf being a light color. Have a dark lit room with just one small light source. For my light, I used a small table lamp that you can find at Wal-Mart with a 40 watt light bulb. Experiment with placement of your subject's face. Do so until you reached how close you want the subject to be from the light source. My head was about 2 feet away from the table lamp. Also, I did not use the lamp shade, it created weird shadows that I did not want to use for this shot. Post processing I turned the photograph black and white, and used a vignette tool to darken other areas.
