Location
I took this photo along a gravel road northwest of Swift Current, Saskatchewan.Time
I was driving down the gravel road, saw the old barn so stopped to shoot some photos at this location. This photo was shot at 1:20PM CST (2014 October 05).Lighting
Looking at the other photos I shot that day, I determined the day was a mix of sun and cloud. It was early afternoon so the sun was still quite high in the sky.Equipment
I shot this hand-held, with a Nikon D200 Aperture Priority f /25 1/60 sec ISO 400 Auto White Balance Exposure 1.00 ev Pattern Metering. I shot this photo using my old kit lens (I got with my F80 SLR camera) - a Nikkor 28-80mm f/3.3-5.6G lens at 34mm.Inspiration
I grew up on a farm in Southwest Saskatchewan. When I see old farmyards, it brings back childhood memories. Because I love seeing old barns and yards, as I was driving along and saw this one, I knew I had to stop to shoot a few photos of it. I had to shoot from the ditch on the outside of the fence bordering the property (even though there were not any signs, I do not trespass on private lands without permission.)Editing
This photo is right out of the camera, shot in JPEG format. The only post-processing I did was to do a basic black-and-white conversion without any other adjustments using ACDSee Pro 6. I would now like to do some post-processing, but for now the photo is as it was shot with a basic B&W conversion. In my camera bag
I have my Nikon D750, D200 and D5100 cameras in my bags along with my Nikon AF-S 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II, a Tamron SP 24-70MM F/2.8 Di VC USD, a Tamron 18-400mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC HLD Lens, Nikon f/2.8 105mm Micro f/2.8 lens, and a Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM Contemporary Lens. I also always have my Samsung S8+ SM-6955W cellular phone with me (I like to use it when I want or need a wider angle photo.)Feedback
My advice for others is to keep your batteries charged up, and to take your camera and go shoot as often as you can. If you are able to go shooting in the country, get off the main roads. This photo was taken on a quiet gravel road. Use caution when you are stopped on any road... put your four-way flashers on, and pull over as far as you safely can, always watching for approaching traffic from either direction. This photo was taken in the early afternoon .... not usually the best time for shooting, but with a few clouds, it worked. Take advantage of the natural lighting - when it is sunny or when it is cloudy or if rain or any other weather system is moving in, and play with your f stops. Take more than one photo... you can always delete it if it doesn't turn out. Try different camera settings and if you have them, different lenses, as well. Most importantly, have fun!!
