The original photo is nothing like this digital painting. The inspiration is, the precession cross at St. John Before the Latin Gate in Bartlesville, Oklahoma.Time
The original photo was shot in late afternoon and in winter, when the low sun light, pours through the south stain glass windows of the church. The low sun allows the colors to spread out in the chapel within and enhance all the dark woods of the benches and pews. Noticing these effects thru the years as a member had always given rise to the fact, that a great photo shot could come, it just took planning and patience, as well as a Father, with insight to see through the eyes of an artist!Lighting
Because of the lighting and the rainbow effects throughout the chapel, I even approached Fr. Michael asking if we could fill the chapel with the smoke from the incenses during Mass as to create the natural rays of the sun being filtered through the windows. With his approval the pictures that followed helped create the passion for doing the Digital Painting , "The Procession Cross"!Equipment
The camera for the shot that produced the after painting is my current trusty Sony A77. The lens on the camera when I took the pictures in the chapel this winter day was a Sony / Minolta 50mm f1.4 AF Low light lens. I usually have my monopod always attached to my camera but many pictures this day were shot using a tripod.Inspiration
First and foremost, Christ our Lord on the Cross, is always far more than inspiration. However, it is this pose on the cross that set my artistic soul afire and with all the colors I was washed with in the Chapel at St. John Before the Latin Gate this day, I knew I had to create a on-fire look to my painting that was to come. Hence the colors you see in this picture, is my interpretation of the fires I feel for this imagery.Editing
The picture above is NOTHING but post-processing and yet not post-processing at all. Using Corel Painter version 2009 and later finishing with version 2012, because I updated/upgraded software during the painting of the picture. I cannot say the picture is post-processed. It is painted. Most of it stoke by stoke, just as you really paint. I have been asked many times, "How long did it take" to paint? I had estimated more than 90 hours. That is what Corel Painter has done with it's software. After painting the picture above it was touched with Topaz Labs, Impression for fishing touches. The final painting was produced to a 20x30 inch canvas, with acrylic coat, mounted in a beautiful ornate frame and sold at church auction, to help with the building of a new school. In my camera bag
My backpack camera bag has at least three lens in it at all times. My favorite portrait Sony F1.4 50mm lens, a 70-300 mm Sony Macro lens and usually a fisheye lens, with at least 6 protective/filter lens. I always have more than 4 extra batteries, cleaning fluid and wipes, rags, flash, writing pad and pen and sometimes mounted on the top of the backpack is my tripod.Feedback
This picture is all about how I started this journey in photography. Many, many years ago, just before leaving for Viet Nam, I was given a camera, so as to take pictures, so that I could produce ART from them. As a trained artist my mother knew, I was not going to have time to draw and paint as I had done earlier. So my advice to anyone in a similar position, "If your mother gives you a camera and tells you to produce ART!" Go for it!
