I took this photo walking by the petting zoo of the Jardin des plantes in Paris. I was on my way to a museum when I was surprised by the composition of the scene. The deer stayed in that position a d the sun was shining right on the spot for about 5-10 seconds, just enough time for me to get my camera out and take one picture.Time
It was in the afternoon. I was running late, on my way to take some pictures in a museum before it closed when I stumbled on this scene.Lighting
It was a cloudy and stormy day and at the exact moment I was walking by the fence a ray of sunshine illuminated a baby deer. I immediately fetched my camera and took a picture. One second later the moment had passed and the sun was covered by dark clouds.Equipment
I was barely starting to take photography seriously so I only had a Canon Rebel T5 and a 75-300 mm kit lens. Which is what I used.Inspiration
It was a strike of luck. I didn’t prepare for this picture at all. I was planning to take a whole different picture. It was a strike of chance and I was lucky enough to have my camera ready in my bag. This one turned out better than the other one I had in mind.Editing
I don’t remember but I don’t think so.In my camera bag
I always carry one 50mm prime lens in my bag. The 50mm matches almost exactly your view focus and detail so just by looking at a scene you can get a pretty good idea of the picture you can take. Otherwise, I pack different lenses according to what I plan to photograph but I generally bring a wide lens (either a canon 20 mm or a canon 10-18mm) and an old soviet 500 mm which is kind of an extreme lens but I like to think of it as a photographer's sniper tool.Feedback
Most photography is patience, waiting for that perfect moment but, once in a while, the perfect moment just presents itself and it does not wait for you. Always have a camera on hand. It will motivate you to take more pictures if it’s already in your hand and if you witness a rare moment that you would love to capture you’ll already have the right tools in your hand. Also, you should always translate “take a picture” by “if the moment might not present itself, take a bunch of slightly different pictures of the same subject and choose the one that has the most to say".
