Location
This image was captured at a dress rehearsal of a high school stage production of Peter Pan.Time
The image was captured in the evening, but the stage lighting is what helped create the visual drama that the Director was looking forLighting
The stage was dimly lit so that the flames would pop out on the stage and create a highly visual dramatic moment for the audience.Equipment
I happened to shoot this particular project with a Canon D1X and the Canon 24-70 f-2.8 lens. The camera was handheld and there was no supplemental lighting equipment useInspiration
We knew in advance that the fire dancing was going to be a highly entertaining moment and visually powerful. Because they were in a live dress rehearsal, the direct her and I discuss the image and what she had hoped to get. I had full faith and confidence that I could capture something special for her. I trusted my instincts about composition and the technical aspects of getting a proper exposure under rapidly changing light conditions. Needless to say, everyone was thrilled with the final product!Editing
I process all my images with Adobe Lightroom. I routine includes slight exposure adjustments, cropping, lens profiling, noise reduction, vignetting, and some opening of the mid tones. My goal is always to maintain a sense of realism and not make the image look to overprocessed. In my camera bag
I taught photography for 40 years, so I have a ton of equipment. I tailor my bag to fit the needs I think I will have when I’m out on a project. Most of the time, I carry slightly more than what I actually need. I don’t want to end up on an assignment and find myself lacking equipment that would have made a difference in the final outcome.Feedback
