Location
This image was captured at the Oceano Dunes State Park in California in 1982.Time
In order to reveal the strong textural quality of the sand dunes, I needed to arrive around sunrise to take advantage of the low angular lighting. Also, morning shooting would insure the dunes had not yet been trampled with footprints from visitors.Lighting
Acute angular direct light creates strong contrast which accentuates the details of the sand.Equipment
For this image, I used my trusty Koni-Omegaflex twin lens reflex camera with my 90mm lens. I shot with Plus-X b&w film and used a #25 red filterInspiration
I was fortunate enough to get some photography training from some of the great masters of 20th century black & white photography. Their classic images were always a source of inspiration and motivation.Editing
In those days, I did all my own darkroom work, which included dodging, burning, vignetting, and contrast adjustments. I did use a red filter on the camera to enhance the contrast of the scene. In my camera bag
Over the years, I have used a wide range of film and digital cameras. Specific brands are not that critical to me. I use what is appropriate for the work I am doing Check my profile to see what I have in my bags. In landscape work, I almost always use a sturdy quality tripod. It is worth the investment.Feedback
As I mentioned earlier, a good quality tripod really helps with landscape photography. To get a large depth of field and minimal image noise, long exposure times will be the norm. Hand holding a camera will create unwanted camera shake. Low ISO’s help reduce image noise and small aperture sizes increase the range of sharpness. Both these factors greatly increase exposure times.
