Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in Whitby Ontario just a few steps away from my home at the time. A severe ice storm had hit most of Southern Ontario very badly, with power out for thousands of homes and businesses. This was some of the aftermath caused by branches and whole trees collapsing under the weight of the ice.

Time

This was in the early afternoon on Christmas Day.

Lighting

The lighting is the natural lighting of the day. No flash was used, I just wanted to capture what I was seeing.

Equipment

I was using a Nikon D3000 with a Tamron 35-270 lens. Hand carried, I was just walking around the neighbourhood trying to capture the incredible sights.

Inspiration

I found the devastation from the ice, which had then been covered with fresh snow to have a strange beauty.

Editing

Not much in the way of post processing, I just wanted to capture what my eye saw.

In my camera bag

My regular 'go to' is my Nikon D300 and the Tamron 35-270. This allows me to cover a lot of different requirements without changing lenses. I do carry an Nikon Speed Light SB 910 Flash for low light work. Recently I acquired a Tamron 150-600, for when I really want to reach out to touch someone. For someone on a budget I have found the Tamron lenses give pretty good bang for the buck.

Feedback

This is a definite case of serendipity. I looked out the window of my home and found a new world outside. I try to always have basic kit ready or near to hand (with at least one charged battery). I have learned the hard way that sometimes the best shots just appear, when your are not ready. And by the time you are ready -- it's too late.
