Location
took this Image in the Delta area of Vancouver, BC, During a snow storm February 5, 2017.Time
Mid morning almost afternoon i think, i was there for a considerable time.Lighting
Yes, because of the Snow storm that day, and the overall haze, it was considerably dark, even at that time of day, and i had to work with the white settings and exosure.Equipment
A hand held Nikon D750, with an extremely heavy Nikon AF-S Nikkor 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR lens. worked my muscles on that session, as i needed to be mobile to get the shot, Vrs. a tripod.Inspiration
i've always wanted to take a great nature shot, one that was national Geography worthy, or as an artist view, was as great as an image as a Robert Bateman painting... i felt that this one did justice of that inspiration. the instant it happened, i knew i had something.Editing
the best shots are those that require little post processing, this is one of them. Yes, i brought out the details in the feathers, highlighting the edges. i also cleaned up a bit of the blur of the crow, but the rest is as it was seen, and shot.In my camera bag
I have a huge Lowepro bag, that seems to not fit everything I carry. it always feels like I'm a soldier hiking with full gear on. With that pack, I always bring my Nikkor 55-300mm, my Nikkor 200-500mm, a Nikkor 24-120MM, a nifty 50 Nikkor 50MM, and my "GO TO" lens, which is a Nikkor 14-24 Ultra wide lens, (Lord, How I love that lens!) Add the Lee Little, Big, and Super Stoppers, the filter holders, the medium ND Grad filters, the 4-5 back up batteries, Lens cleaners and cloths, extra Memory cards, and my fathers old vintage but amazing Manfrotto tripod... with ALL of that, I'm usually good to go for anything. OH, and a sore back most times, which also means a small flask of something special comes in handy. ;)Feedback
patience, Time, and determination. Nature shots are moments in time that if you wait, they will show themselves to you. They wont work on your time schedule, and it doesn't wait for the right time, or light. it just happens. You just have to be there, ready to record that special moment. When i have taken nature shots, its been during a long session, 6-7 hours minimal... but if your like me, it never feels that long.
