Behind The Lens

Location

This is one of the Granite Mtn. Potholes, in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness Area of Washington State. Deep into the mountains, 8 miles in, and 3000 ft. elevation gain. Most of the gain starts at 4 miles in. Off the beaten path a little over .5 mile, not a destination for the inexperienced hiker. Beauty abounds all over this area of the state, which is why we keep coming back to explore more of it.

Time

We were heading into the backcountry when we came upon this spot. 10:15 AM, perfect weather and broken clouds. Something just said, "take the shot"

Lighting

Lighting was all natural. We were passing through, and I liked how the sun and shadows were affecting the terrain, so I took the shot. Like most of my shots, they're spontaneous.

Equipment

shot with a point-and-shoot Sony WX-350, a nice lightweight pocket ready camera.

Inspiration

knowing I probably wouldn't be back here anytime soon, it just seemed like the right moment with perfect lighting.

Editing

Minor tweaks in post with LR.

In my camera bag

Now, with the pocket point and shoot retired, I've stepped up to a Full Frame Nikon D750 with the Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8, which is my go-to walk around setup

Feedback

If the scenery speaks to you, shoot it. Steady hand and breathe. Play with the settings until you find the shot you love. That's the beauty of digital, you don't have to wait for film to get processed and get to see your results instantly.
