Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in Oulu at the frozen beach in Nallikari.

Time

Can't remember the exact time when the photo was taken but it was taken in January. During that January there is not that much daytime in northern Finland. Sun was already setting during the day and it made the scene look like it was taken late in the evening.

Lighting

Since there are not that much daylight during the winter in northern Finland, you can get "sunset" photos during the day. Sun drew a dramatic light to the scene and the lens I used controlled the facing light nicely.

Equipment

Nikon D600, Tamron 28-75 F2.8

Inspiration

I was not really planning to take this shot. I tend to have camera with me when going for walks and same case happened when taking this photo. I remember it was somewhat cold and windy that day so there was not many people walking on the beach or on the frozen sea (you can see few in the horizon). When the picture was taken, there was not that much snow. Beach was covered by the ice and you could hardly tell where the beach ends and sea starts. I found nice angle where you could see the fine line between the beach and sea and framed the guard tower so that it would follow the rule of thirds. I also did the same thing with the horizon and wanted to emphasize the dramatic sky

Editing

Only post processing I did was to play with the curves to make the shot look even more dramatic. I did not need to play with colors that much.

In my camera bag

It depends what im planning to do. When I go for walks I usually have my Z6, 24-70 and a DJI Mavic mini with me. If I have a on location portrait shoot, I usually have my camera, 85mm and 70-200 with me + godox ad200 as keylight and some speedlights as fill lights.

Feedback

Just have your camera with you. You dont always have to plan ahead when taking amazing shot. When you feel uninspired, take the came with you, go for a walk and the inspiration will follow you.
