I've been to the Vermillion Lakes in Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada many times, and yet I had never seen this small pond along the shore of the lakes until this particular morning. What surprised me was that this little pond wasn't frozen, yet the large Vermillion Lakes behind the pond were completely frozen, and the average temperature over the past few weeks had been close to -20 C. In fact it was about -12 C when this photo was taken.
