Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in the front yard of our 10 acre farm. We were raising rabbits at the time and I wanted to incorporate one of them into this image with my oldest son. This photo also means a lot to me as my wife and I had dreamed of having our own farm one day so our kids could experience that kind of life style like the both of us did when we were kids.

Time

This photo was taken at 4:30 pm on October 29th 2016. I always love shooting about 2 hours before sunset as you get really nice soft shadows and highlights as the sun is going down.

Lighting

I almost always only use natural light in my images. I just love the raw beauty that it offers. I also love shooting as the in the evening as the sun is going down to get those nice soft shadows and highlights.

Equipment

I have a very basic and simple set up. I love being able to just grab my camera and shot whatever is happening at the moment, which was the case with this image. So I only used my Sony a7ii and Rokinon 85mm 1.4 manual focus lens.

Inspiration

I’m usually inspired by whatever it is that my kids are doing. I love just shooting candid pictures of them playing with the farm animals in the barnyard or playing with each other down by the pond. Kids can be more creative than I am at times, so I try to capture those moments every chance I get.

Editing

Yes, I start out by analyzing the image and deciding what I can do to draw attention to the subjects and help tell the story. Psychologically when you look at an image, your eyes see light first and vibrant colors after that, so with that in mind, I slightly desaturated the edges of the image and brightened up my subjects a touch so when you look at the image your eyes are immediately drawn to the subjects.

In my camera bag

Again, I like to keep a very simple minimalist setup, so I usually have in my bag my main camera, Sony a7iii and a backup camera, Sony a7ii. My main lens, Sigma 135mm f1.8 art and Sigma 50mm f1.4 art as well as extra batteries and SD cards. This of course might change depending on the type of session I’m doing that day. But this is usually what’s in my bag.

Feedback

Be flexible and ready to capture the moment at any given time because they happen fast and frequently. But also don’t feel bad when you miss a moment because you well also miss most of them. It’s trail and error, you’ll capture some gems but you well also capture a lot of nothing. Above all, just have fun and make beautiful memories.
