Behind The Lens

Location

On a trip to Trinidad & Tobago a dear friend took me for a drive through Chaguaramas and on the road to Maqueripe beach we stopped for me to shoot this decaying beauty of Colonial legacy.

Time

We had meandered our way along the route, laughing and joking our way together while I shot photos all morning. Around 11:30 am a troupe of South American Vultures (Corbeaux) had taken my interest as they swooped in and out of the scenic landscape, we rounded the corner and I leaped out to crouch down and take the shot. The birds are out of frame, flying free.

Lighting

Despite the strong midday Tropical light, a massive forest called the Bamboo Cathedral filters the sunshine into this moody, haunting effect, that enhances the elements of natural decay and ruin.

Equipment

Spending the morning shooting photos on my Canon had fried the battery so, this was shot on my Iphone with ambient lighting and standard settings.

Inspiration

Discovering this neglected colonial church decaying in the jungle, embraced by the Bamboo Cathedral stirred poignant emotions. The community that had been nurtured in the space was long gone, forgotten by the modern world. The church and grave markers the only remnants left of a once thriving, unique culture.

Editing

Minimum post processing was done on this photo, a little tweaking of the light balance in the foreground.

In my camera bag

I travel with my Fuji TX20, 50-230 telephoto lens and single leg tripod, very handy for quick candid shots.

Feedback

Being prepared to note the features of and shoot with ambient lighting is crucial for travel photography. I am a painter as well and use the elements of design eg: contrast, rhythm, balance, value etc. naturally when shooting photos too. Keen observation of the environment will lead you to use existing lighting to your best advantage.
