Location
The White River in Arkansas USATime
At sunrise as the fog was just starting to burn off the river.Lighting
The sun busting through the fog and the clouds created an amazing background for the silhoutte and accented the contrast between the pre-dawn darkness that was there when we first started fishing on the river that day.Equipment
I was carrying an old Nikon 5200 point and shoot in a pouch on my fly fishing vest. I use it for taking pictures on the river. No big financial disaster if it got dunked.Inspiration
I was fishing downstream from my friend Brett and was looking back up toward him as the sun started to burn through the fog. It began to look as though his head was aglow and my guess was the silhoutte would look pretty cool so I put my casting on hold and took a few shots with the Nikon.Editing
I did very little post-processing work on this picture. Just some cropping. Otherwise it's just an accurate depiction of what I saw back up river. In my camera bag
I cary an assortment of equipment and depending upon the river and location I make a call as to which cameras to put at risk. I have several Nikon bodies (D100, D200, D300, D7000) and rotate a number of AF-S f2.8 lenses. I use this equipment when I'm on a trip but just go to take pictures of others that morning or evening. In my vest pocket I cary one of two or three point and shoots. A couple of older Nikon Coolpix cameras and then a couple of Panasonic Lumix options with better zoom ranges. I always have my iPhone in a waterproof bag in my vest as well.Feedback
Get an inexpensive point and shoot that still has a good zoom and good glass. Get a scuba pouch to carry it in your fishing waders or vest or backpack. Find a good, stable position downstream from your subject and be willing to risk the camera to get the shot. Taking pictures while standing in a river takes a little time to get used to but stable footing and a camera or older phone that you would be willing to sacrifice if dropped in the river help take the stress off of the shoot. I take lots of pictures when I can and enjoy the time on the river when I'm catching.
