I was on the Toronto Islands in the harbour area when I was attracted by a cloud of orange butterflies around a bed of purple flowers. Then there was a couple embracing in the background. Everything conspired to bring this photo to life.

Well, thank you, John. Composition is important when you have a $200 camera.

Behind The Lens

Location

This is on Toronto Island on the north side of Lake Ontario, a Great Lake. As I'm an award winning painter, photography started happening during the 2010's. A photographer friend told me to just take some photos and I'd pick it up. So every shot is about composition, colour, light and shade, much like painting.

Time

Late afternoon in late summer.

Lighting

The light becomes magical when the sun is starting to set.

Equipment

I bought a tripod but rarely use it, especially as I'm usually going on long trecks. The Canon Pixel camera was about $200 new. Now I've graduated to a $200 cellphone.

Inspiration

I was drawn by the butterflies. Then the couple showed up. Too good to ignore.

Editing

It didn't need anything after the capture.

In my camera bag

I don't have a bag or a camera anymore. I bring the Motorola cellphone and wait for magic.

Feedback

You can't really plan life. With practice you can just see opportunities when they show up. Photography can be like that even in familiar surroundings. Watch how the lighting changes everything.
