This must be my first time for me to capture the webs of night. I heard a lot about them when I was a child. They were always forming outside my bedroom window, but can't say that I ever got to see them properly. So they are a tricky subject for any photographer to focus on. Then there are the floaty, self-illuminating orb things that seem to be little worlds unto themselves. I must say that, until this pic, these varied aspects of the night web had only existed in my imagination.

Behind The Lens

Location

The big mature trees in the local cemetery in Toronto, Canada are an inspiration for me. When I bought a new tripos, I walked there in the late afternoon. The shapes and colours became more magical after the sun set. So I kept shooting for another 45-minutes. It was February and when my hands started freezing I made my way to the nearest gate. It was locked and didn't think I'd get over the eight foot fences with my frozen hands. So I crawled under the gates, pulling the camera bag and tripod along the ground behind me.

Time

It was about 5.30pm when the knowing feeling in my hands finally drew me out of my photo reveries.

Lighting

Producing something magical and evocative out of ordinary and familiar surroundings is artististry. It's more like revisioning than documenting what's in front of you. If I want magic, I observe the lighting and the details of how it's changing. The unfamiliar resides in times when changes come rapidly either side of sunrise and sunset.

Equipment

A $200 Boxing Day special Pixel. The tripod was carbon-based, lightweight, by RocketFish.

Inspiration

I choose my favourite forms after walking through an area several times. I was excited to go to my favorite tree and set up. But the sunset became so much more interesting. So I found any old tree that would give me the background that I wanted. Then the trees and the background became just as important.

Editing

The colours in the lighting the background became more interesting as I enhanced them.

In my camera bag

I'm a point and click guy. Composition, colour and timing are most important. No tools in the bag.
