It is hard to write of anything else, when Christmas begins to show. My wife would ask for the boxes from the cabinets in the garage.
Mangers of wood, straw, clay and ceramic. Some she'd found free, some were gifts in cardboard veneer, some imported from Italy. My job was to organize and open the cases, scattered around the living room furniture and floor.
We'd start with the tree, which expanded over the years to smaller and more trees, each one with some kind of specailty...my trains, her bears, the children's homemade ornaments from plastic crafts.
It was easy then to decorate, with her eye and my arms, a ladder and two weekends. The two main rooms and kitchen in layers of gold, red, green and blue...ribbons everywhere.
It was hard to take things down, after New Years, because the house seemed so drab aftwerward. We start listening to music around mid October...I bought the CD changer just for that...hours of orchestras and Time-Life Collection, old country tunes and Andy Williams....
Christmas when the rest of the gang arrived, she'd be adorned in a flowing red and green flowered print..radiant and royal. It wasn't hard to fall in love with a queen every Christmas day....
