There is a 'shortcut' two-lane highway through desert and mountains that bypasses driving through the LA Basin with its webs of freeways when driving from the East, say from Phoenix or from I-15 (Salt Lake City and Las Vegas) to the San Francisco Bay Area, Sacramento and hooking up to northbound I-5 which goes all the way to Canada. After traversing desert, there are rows of windmills atop high mountain peaks catching high winds sucked into the superheated 'Great Basin' deserts and otherwise as the winds at this latitude in any case move from West to East -- and over mountain ranges, as here, get funneled at very, very high speeds.
