Elkhorn Slough, the former mouth of the Salinas River, now blocked off in favor of a new river mouth to the south, is an estuary and a rookery for birds as well as seals and sea otter which raft there every night. Arthur Frommer has named it one of California's 10 'must see' places, even though it's presence is mostly a mystery to most Californians. Here brown pelicans have discovered a run of spawning fish that pass through a culvert under a road that funnels the fish together and makes them 'easy pickings' and causes the pelicans to have a fish feast, which happens for a few days just once a year when the tides and the fish spawn run is just right.
