Location
This Photo was taken on the beach at Camp Hero Park in Montauk NY looking east towards the famous lighthouse on the bluff above. We were walking down the beach away from the crowds when we passed a large boulder sitting in the surf, as you can see there aren't any others around so it must of come down from he cliffs at some point, I took 20-30 images of waves hitting this boulder and this was the most spectacular.Time
This was midday, I cant be sure if it was 11am or 1pm but the sun was high in the sky any perhaps slightly behind me since I'm facing east, it was summer but it was not humid that day and the breeze was up, as it always is out there.Lighting
It was an incredibly clear day, not a cloud to be seen for miles, high sun and stark colors like the white lighthouse and dark stones really gave the image a ton of natural contrastEquipment
I shot this on a Canon EOS 6D with a 17-40 Wide angle landscape lens handheld with a fast shutter speed and a long aperture.Inspiration
I was looking for angles all day at the camp since it is an old military installation but wasn't getting anything I was truly proud of. The lighthouse has been shot from every angle imaginable but I hadn't seen many images where it was a background figure, once I saw the waves crashing all I had to do was turn around a wait for a good one.Editing
I always post process everything in Lightroom, I converted to bale and white and darkened the blue tones to make the sky super dark. There were many fishermen and tourists that also were deleted in Lightroom. Contrast was boosted as well as Whites and highlights. In my camera bag
I work in architecture and design photography so my daily bag is several lens, flashes, tripods, batteries, a drone, and gimbal and 2 camera bodies, my travel bag is much smaller and lighter for efficiency I have 1 body, 2 lenses, 17-40 and 24-105, occasionally I'll bring out my 150-600 but thats usually for a purpose not just walking around, 1 flash and a small travel tripod with a mini ball-head.Feedback
Honestly walk-around the area you're interested in, I didn't plan this shot, I found it. Have enough gear and knowledge of your equipment and how to process to capture and make what you want, you've got to be able to get it right the first time because you may not get that combination of light and timing and location ever again .
