"We choose the moon" My sons mountain bike team mantra because it may be hard but, its worth it. This is our second attempt at capturing this image I learned a lot the first time around and was able to create the image I had envisioned. My son balanced himself a top the narrow arch long enough for me to take a few shots just as the Moon was rising behind him.

Behind The Lens

Location
This photo was taken in St. George Utah in a little hiking area above town
Time
This shot took about 45 minutes to set up it was taken at 6:31 in the evening just after the sun had set and the super moon was rising on November 13 2016 it was actually a day before the Super Moon so that I could time the sunset and Moon Rise perfectly.
Lighting
The lighting for this photo was timed with the setting of the sun and the moon rising so that I could get enough ambient light for the foreground while still being able to capture the details in the moon.
Equipment
This was my second attempt at this shot I had tried a month earlier and didn't get the distance I needed to capture what I was after. I used Photopills app to determine my location which was approximately half a mile from the subject. I set my Cannon mark 3 on a tripod with a sigma 150-500 lens set at 500mm. to help with lighting up the foreground a set up 4 HDV-Z96 led lights with an orange plastic filter. I also used a remote shutter to minimize camera shake.
Inspiration
My son is on the High school mountain bike team and the motto for this year was "we choose the moon" It is his senior year and last year racing with the team, so I wanted to create something special for him. I chose a location that would represent our area which is red sandstone arches something that says desert southern utah. also something that looked difficult to achieve which is why I placed him in a precarious position on top of the arch. He is very skilled at riding technical terrain, and I wanted to incorporate that.
Editing
I did a little post processing in light room, contrast highlights shadows clarity and vibrance a little sharpening and noise reduction. There is also another version of this photo where the power lines are removed.
In my camera bag
Depends on what I'm shooting
Feedback
If you want the Moon to be large you will need a 500mm lens and a good distance between you and the subject. I was about a half mile away from my son when I took this shot. we communicated via cell phone on speaker so when the moon rose to the position I wanted I asked him to mount his bike. I use the phone app photo pills to determine where the moon will rise in relation to where I want to be to capture an image. I had to move slightly from where I initially thought I should be to get the moon just right behind the arch. I did a lot of research and tried this shoot once before, I made the mistake of being too close to the subject the first time I was uncomfortable being so far away also i didn't time the light correctly and it was too dark by time the moon rose to get any foreground. I tried this shoot again a month later and corrected all the things that I was dissatisfied with the first time and got the shot I was after.
