Location
I took this photo at a spot just a mile behind my house in Leeds Utah, we call it pride rock because the way it overhangs the valley. I have always been drawn to this rock dreaming of different ways to incorporate it in my photographs.Time
I had been wanting to photograph my son riding this area on his mountain bike so we planned to take a ride on a nice evening after school let out. I remember packing my gear in my back pack and racing down the trail on our bikes to catch the setting sun. I took this in December when the day is short but, the colors of the landscape are phenomenal this time of year, this image was captured about 6:00 pm.Lighting
I wanted to capture the way the setting sun makes the sandstone glow and light up the valley I like the way the sunlight was reflecting from my son I was hoping to also have the clouds changing color in the back ground but, we were a few minutes early for that shot which may not have turned out so well at casting such a nice light on my subject.Equipment
This shot was taken with a cannon EOS 60D The lens is an EFS 18-135mm taken at 24mm focal length ISO 320 1/60 sec at f/7.1 No flash or tripodInspiration
This was definitely a planned shoot I am inspired by my sons talent on a mountain bike I have a lot of photos of him racing for his High School mountain bike team but, I wanted something different something that could show a more technical side of what he does. He will be graduating high school this year and I wanted a few different photos of him in his various school roles to put on his graduation announcement. This photo captures his brave spirit and talent.Editing
I did a little processing in Lightroom I took down the highlights and minimized the shadows bumped up the clarity, Vibrance and saturation. In my camera bag
Normally I carry my cannon EOS 60D and a variety of lenses because I like to have options they include my Rokinon 14mm (I take a lot of landscape photos) Sigma 50mm Tamron 10-24mm and cannon EFS 18-135mm 70-300mm and Macro EF-S 60mm I also usually carry my Manfrotto carbon tripod, my pack is kind of heavy. Because I was riding my mountain bike for this photo I chose to bring a wide angle and The 18-135mm to keep my pack light and also minimize the loss of equipment in case I took a fall.Feedback
My main goal in capturing this photograph was to display the subjects sense of adventure, I think the key to this was finding an unusual location that created a sense of danger and timing the shot as best we could for the evening light. I know the location very well so I knew what to expect from the light and the terrain I knew the best location to place myself to get the angle I was after, I also knew the ability of my subject , his limits, and we definitely had his safety in mind. I believe the more familiar you are with your location and subject, the better chance you will have at creating a fantastic shot.
