Elk once roamed through much of the United States and are not confined to Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming, where this was taken. This cow feeds her fast growing young in the fall in its second season after its birth as it's well on its way to adulthood and to a harsh winter as well for which it must be well nourished. Already, the first fall snow of the season has fallen the previous night.
