This was taken at "Protaras" in Cyprus on a very special morning ! TPE (The Photographers Ephimeris) app gave me the exact position and time of the rising sun ! I managed to get 2 frames that morning and this is the second one , when the sun already cleared the horizon. As usual , a single RAW file taken with the Nikon D800 and the Nikkor 14-24 f-2.8 fitted with the Nisi filter holder plus the Nisi 10 stop and the Nisi 3 stop Reverse grad . Exposure was 115,0 sec; f-16; ISO 100 .I do not like going "smaller" than f-8 but I needed the slowest shutter speed I could get. Nisi has a , so called , "Super stop" , a 15 stop ND but I did not have it at the time.
Basic post process ... Additionally a darkening gradient was used to lower the sky luminosity and a little dodge and burn was applied.
To lower the contrast and keep control , I use the following method , in Photoshop , that I did share in a previous upload but I am sure that many will find very useful in a similar situation (high contrast scene). 1) Create a merged layer on top of all your layers ( CTRL + ALT + SHIFT + E) 2) convert this into a black&white layer (Image-Adjustments-Black&white) 3) change the blending mode to "Overlay" 3) Invert the layer ( CTRL + I) 4) Lower the "Fill" or " Opacity" To zero and try values from 1 to 20 for opacity or Fill.

Behind The Lens

Location

I planned this photo using "Photographers Ephemeris" in order to know the exact spot that the sun would rise from the sea at sunrise. This was taken in Cyprus , Protaras. The rough rocks against the calm and smooth sea with the rising sun create a striking contradiction , making the sunrise special.

Time

I arrived there in the evening , scouted the place and after locating this promising place I went for sleep in my car and woke at 4 o'clock in the morning so as to get to the place that I spotted. With tripod in water and me on the rocks . I was greeted with an amazing sunrise that left me there looking and taking photos.

Lighting

having some clouds in the sky was really helpful since this helps to disperse light and create beautiful colors and reduce contrast as in this case. there is very little time to take such an image since the fast changing light goes from soft photogenic to harsh and ugly in a matter of minutes.

Equipment

This one , as most of my landscape images , was taken with a Nikon D800 with the Nikon 14-24 F2.8 , on manual focus , with a Nissi 10 stop ND plus a Nissi 2 stop ND graduated filter mounted on a Gitzo tripod.

Inspiration

Protaras , is a seaside town one and a half hour trip away from my home filled with rocky formations and wild shores. I knew that the calm and smooth sea and rising sun would compliment perfectly the rough and wild rocks creating a beautiful image. I also love the lonely rock on the upper right that adds interest .

Editing

a single NEF file imported into Light room , leveling , highlights lowered , shadows lifted .. passed to PS for sharpening. No processing whatsoever , not even a vignette.

In my camera bag

Since I mainly shoot landscape I always have with me my main body a Nikon D800 and a backup Nikon D650. I always Carry with me the Nikon 14-24 F2.8. and the Nikon 24-70 f 2.8 , a Nissi filter system for the 14-24 and a Nissi filter system for the 24-70. I keep the filters and holders in pouches that hang over my shoulder making the use of them easy and quick. A large microfiber optical cloth that helps keep lenses and filters clean from sea spray and the occasional rain. 2 remote controls with batteries and one completely manual. a head torch with red light to keep the night vision , an umbrella and a good pair of boots. lastly my Gitzo tripod that goes everywhere my bag goes !

Feedback

Pre planning is key in getting a good landscape image. you have to know where you will place your tripod and camera well before the time you decide to take your image. when you have found a pleasing composition stay put and wait for the right light. This , for landscape , is usually right before the sun rises or sets. using an application on your phone to see where exactly the sun will rise or set will make things much easier in composing and preparing our shot. get to the place you are about o photograph well before sunrise or sunset. be prepared for sudden light and weather changes. If things do not work that day , visit again another day , and another and another. eventually you will get the shot your after. I often visit a place more than 10 times for the conditions to be good for taking the shot. So patience and preparation are a must for good results.
