Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Chittenango Falls SP in central NY.

Time

I shot this in the midafternoon. Not generally a great time to shoot waterfalls in gorges without filters but this one worked well I think.

Lighting

I was fortunate that because of some cloud cover I didn't have the direct light that would have normally washed the shot out using the slower shutter speed. Also I got in close and low so that the steep sides of the gorge and the natural shade provided by the trees really tweaked the light naturally.

Equipment

This was pretty basic. I shoot a Nikon D3300 and was using a basic midquality tripod to insure stability.

Inspiration

Nature is always an inspiration to me. I love to spend my freetime outside enjoying the variety of miracles that make up our planet. I also crave time away from the hustle of my every day life. It helps to keep me grounded and in touch with what I believe is truly important in life and myself. Waterfalls are a special inspiration as when I see them I see two very opposite elements, water which is so fluid and rock which is enduring doing nothing but what they are meant to do naturally and always creating something beautiful. I am also brought back to the awareness that this beauty was created not overnight but over centuries. They are one of the things that help me touch base with thevsstness of the universe and my small place in it.

Editing

I use very little post processing except to help boost color or reducing brightness to help intensify clarity and color.

In my camera bag

Photography is a hobby for me and sadly I don't have much besides my camera and a basic tripod. I shoot a Nikon D3300 which is a very solid piece of equipment. While I intend to acquire more equipment in time I love the fact that even with some minimal equipment I can capture and share some beauty with others and perhaps inspire them as well.

Feedback

My best advice for others is to shoot what you love shooting. I believe that you'll be drawn to those things and see them in a way that others can't. If your new go with groups that can give advice or take some basic classes to help you learn about different settings on your camera and how to achieve new effects. After that experiment. Get out and do what you love to do. Shoot everything as often as you can to see what you come up with. Try new things. Never be afraid to fail because if you are you'll also never succeed.
