Behind The Lens

Location

I got this shot at Robert Tremon State Park in Ithaca, NY. I was out chasing waterfalls on a Waterfalls Wednesday during a drought in upstate NY. I had stopped at Taughannock Falls SP and Butermilk Falls SP with no luck but third time was the charm and I had a great afternoon.

Time

Definitely the afternoon. I love shooting in natural light and the later afternoons/evenings seem to have great natural light. I like mornings too but I have a full time second shift job that usually puts the kibosh on my mornings.

Lighting

Most of my pictures are nature shots, lakes, waterfalls, things I see while hiking so I like natural light. I find late afternoon and early evening light when the angle is low seems to add a magical touch and some sweet effects

Equipment

I just recently moved into the arena of DSLR photography and purchased a Nikon D3300. For this shot I was using the standard Nikkor 18-55mm that came with the camera

Inspiration

I am primarily a nature photographer. My job and life are hectic and time away from that soothes and calms me. I have always loved waterfalls and spend a great deal of time finding them and photographing them. Waterfalls always remind me to slow down and not push so much. In waterfalls I see two great forces in nature, rock and water, working together to create beauty. Neither is trying to do anything more than what nature tells it to do and in doing just that and nothing more some of the most spectacular creations are made.

Editing

I'm not very savvy with computers or any of the programs others use for post processing and although I do want to learn some aspects of that in the future I'm a big believer in letting my vision and my equipment do the majority of the work. My only post processing that I use currently are filters and other tools available after I upload to any of the sites that I use to share my photos. I used those to pop the color of the water just a bit to give it the lighter blue tinge. I am also just learning the capabilities of this camera and this was my first shoot playing with the shutter speed for the effect

In my camera bag

As I said earlier I'm just starting the journey into DSLR photography so right now it's a bare minimum. My Camera, a Nikkor18-55mm 1:3.5-5.6 and the Nikkor 55-200mm 1:4-5.6 lens.

Feedback

Many thanks to the other photographer who was at the same spot who helped me to tweak out my shutter speed on this shot. I believe I was at 1/4 or 1/5. Other than that I didn't play much with the settings. My best advice is to be in love with what your shooting, play around with it and try some angles others might not have tried. For this shot I got right down reclined against the rocks at the bottom of the catch pool angling up to get as much of the falls as possible. This falls is in a fairly narrow gorge so it was the only way to get a full scale shot. My lower legs were literally in the catch pool. Other than that, play with the settings to see what they will do. Some of my most interesting shots have been the result of thinking, "I wonder what would happen if I..." Above all have fun because at the end of the day that's what I believe this should be all about.
