Behind The Lens
Location
This photo was taken in Amboselli Natural Reserve, in Kenya in the afternoon of 18 January 2014. The Kilimanjaro (in Tanzanian territory) is just behind AmboselliTime
Mid afternoon, 16:27h, in a sunny clear day with a few cloudsLighting
in mid afternoon, the light is far from perfect. Add it is the dry season, dust everywhere, much of it raised by the huge elephant herd crossing the road, the sun quite in front of us, on our left: not precisely optimum conditions for a picture. But you have to take the image when it comes and do with what you have.Equipment
Nikon D700, Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8 ED VR II with 2x multiplier (focal length 400 mm), from the open roof of a car (of course no tripod). It had to be a fast shot because the elephants were going fast. (1/800, f/13, ISO 500)Inspiration
The light was very strange, the scene a bit absurd: wildlife in a road, a pickup caught in the middle of a herd of elephants. We were quite against the sun what, added to the dust, contributed to seeing only shapes.Editing
At the time, I was using the Apple Aperture programme. My post processing for Raw (NEF in Nikon) images was very minimal (it continues being rather minimal but now I do it in Lightroom). In this one I just converted the original photo to Black and White and added a bit more contrast. It is practically as shot, not even cropped. In my camera bag
In this trip, in 2014, I had a D700 and a Nikon 1 V1. The lenses I mostly used were the Nikon 24-70 mm and 70-200 mm, both f/2.8, the latter with the 2x multiplier. The V1 has an adapter so you can use any Nikon lens with it. In my bag I also carried prime lenses, the Nikon 50 mm f/1.4, and the 28 mm 2.8. Nowadays I mostly use a Nikon 810 with the same lenses plus the 35 mm 2:00. If I can (weight considerations), I also carry the D700. If I am traveling by car i take the tripod, otherwise it stays at home.Feedback
The best images can come anytime, at any hour of the day, when one is most unaware. One has to react quickly and take the opportunity when it comes, even if conditions are not the best or the lens is not the most adequate or .... Just take the picture. The important point is to "see" the image when you can take it.
