Behind The Lens

Location

May I introduce you to Magallanes, a big (5.5 Kgs) Ragdoll male cat, born in Bogota, Colombia, a citizen now of France. At one point Magallanes moved to Madrid and 6 months later to Paris where he lives in a very pretty little apartment with his beloved caretaker and companion since Bogota. From time to time, he or I travel to our respective homes (in Madrid and Paris) so we can see each other. Since he is so beautiful, each time we meet we do at least one photo session but usually, the camera is always around when he is at home. This particular picture was taken at my home in Madrid last 1 May 2021. To note that Magallanes recently won another award in Viewbug (Hidden Gem - see jloc-2020-02-008) for a picture I took at his home in Paris last year.

Time

That night, Magallanes and I had been watching a film on TV. I took the picture when the film ended and we were going to "retire" to sleep at 23:48 h. I thought he looked lovely, up there in the sofa, under the very dim yellow light in the room, so I decided to take his picture. The camera was on the table with the 50 mm on. Magallanes was still watching the names of the actors in the film when I took his picture. I think he very much liked the film

Lighting

There were only two very dim direct lights in the room and, I suppose, the reflection of the TV light (big TV) some 3 meters from the sofa where we had been watching the film

Equipment

The light was very poor but I had the Nikon Z 50 mm 1.8 S in my Nikon Z7 camera. The Z 50 mm, a fantastic lens, does not need much light at a speed of 1/15 , f1.8, ISO 1000. The Z7 has VR in camera and you can take pictures at very low speed. Magallanes does not like seeing tripods around and you have to be quick with his photos.

Inspiration

He is an animal of great beauty, both internally (he is very kind) and externally. Impossible to be with him and not take his pictures. The "no light" situation at f1.8 made it even more appealing

Editing

Very light processing in Lightroom, just shades and contrast, I don't like post processing - do not even know how to use Photoshop

In my camera bag

Nowadays a Nikon Z6 and Z7, with some F mount lenses and 2 or 3 new Z Lenses, among which, the 50 mm 1.8 is the star

Feedback

Get any animal as beautiful as Magallanes and you will not be able to stop taking pictures. It is not difficult, every animal is beautiful. Even some humans are too
