Location
This was taken from a walkway looking back at the Boston Harbor. Various hotels and businesses can be seen in the background.Time
This was taken about a half hour after sunset, when the sun is at a significant depth below the horizon and when the residual, indirect sunlight takes on a predominantly blue shade.Lighting
The lighting was "wicked hard" using an off camera speed light with a blue gel filter, I ran down the chain triggering the flashes' test button 3 times along the way, to make the entire length of the chain turn blue! I managed to get it just right on the fifth try just as before the batteries in my speed light died.Equipment
My Nikon D750 was mounted on a very low tripod, off camera speed light, and blue gel filterInspiration
I was out with a photography class and ready to head home after a rainy, cold weekend when I saw some people looking back at the Harbor. I decided to take a low perspective and wanted to keep the buildings within the first link visible. After a test shot i decided I didn't like the black chain so I flashed it with a gel to make it blue. Others from my group saw my shot and tried it with red and green gels, but I prefer the blue.Editing
The cement walk in the bottom of the picture had some unsightly bird droppings on it so I cloned them out. I also increased the exposure slightly on the chain. In my camera bag
I shoot a lot of concert photography so my Nikon D750 and my Sigma 24-120, and Sigma 70-200 are always close to me. If I'm going for landscapes or seascapes i'll add in a Nikon 10 mm prime.Feedback
The main thing for this type of shot is the time of day (blue hour) and an interesting foreground subject. Without the chain, this picture doesn't hold interest. It's the leading line of the chain accented by the same color blue that attracts the viewer's eye. More advice: Experiment and Have Fun!!!
