Location
This photograph was taken in the small fishing town of Eden on the NSW South Coast, Australia. I grew up in this beautiful seaside town and have admired the majesty of the pelicans that call the local wharf home. I am so glad that I managed to capture them on my last visit to the area.Time
This image was taken in the middle of the day just as a storm was starting to build.Lighting
The light is usually quite harsh during this time of the day. Although with the cloud cover forming over the area the light on the pelicans became more even. This was great for me as I was not after a high contrast image.Equipment
I captured this photograph handheld using a Nikon D7100 camera body with a 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6 lens.Inspiration
Photographing the pelicans was on my 'to-do' list during this visit as I had photographed them before. Last time I captured an image of the wharf that featured these beautiful birds. This time I wanted to them to be the main focus and subject of my next shoot. I was driving through town and noticed a storm approaching and knew that it would be a great backdrop. I ended up creating a series of images involving the local pelicans and 'Pelicans On Rocks' has become popular.Editing
I wanted a fine art effect for this particular image. Originally I was going to edit it to look like an early film image, but I changed my mind. The clouds were quite dark and blue and I decided to reduce the saturation and bring the detail in the clouds out. I also added a brush to the pelicans and the rocks and sharpened them up a little. All of the editing was done in Adobe Lightroom.In my camera bag
For the past year and a half I have been carrying around my Nikon D7100 accompanied by a 35mm f1.8 lens, 18-140mm f3.5-5.6 lens and a 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6 lens. They have served me well and I highly recommend if you want great value for money this is a great camera. I have recently upgraded my gear and have started using a Nikon D810. I have just purchased a Tamron 15-30mm F/2.8 lens, a Tokina 24-70mm f2.8 lens and the Tokina 100mm f2.8 macro lens. They are all performing brilliantly.Feedback
A piece of advice I would like to share when capturing and image like this is get down low and be patient. Taking a lot of shots hoping one will work out is no way to photograph birds. Be mindful of your background and make sure it is not distracting. Also be aware of all subjects in the image. One of the reasons I reduced the blue saturation in the sky is it distracted from the pelicans and the colours in the rocks.
