Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken when I still live in Perth, Western Australia. This is the Everlasting Flower, a flower that blooms brilliantly around Perth during the Spring time.

Time

It was taken when I walk around the campus ground of University of Western Australia. There was a patch of land where the campus staff plant a lot of Everlasting Flower and I decided to have a go and take one photo of them.

Lighting

This was taken using daylight natural lighting. No additional lighting used. However, I decided to darken the background into a solid black color during post processing, to make the yellow and white color looks more contrasty.

Equipment

This photo was taken with one of my most favourite lens, the Russian-made Helios 44M-7 lens that was adapted on Olympus OM-D E-M10mkii camera. The lens is well build and very robust (the Russian did know how to build a tank :D after all) and the image it produced is quite lovely, with its own characteristics, while the camera is small, with superb 5-axis IBIS which make it easier to capture images.

Inspiration

During the spring, this flower always blooms brilliantly around many area in Perth, particularly around the UWA campus ground. BUT, people seems to ignore their beauty and that when it hits me, I need to capture at least one good image of them.

Editing

Yes. Rather heavily. I use Adobe Lightroom to do all post-processing for this image, including totally darkened the background.

In my camera bag

I tend to carry as light as possible, except when I do paid work. Usually, I only pack one camera and one lens for a day. It is one of my consistent shooting discipline that put a limitation and force me to be more creative when facing difficult situation in shooting on the street. Usually, I'm packing Olympus OM-D E-M1mk.i or OM-D E-M10mk.ii camera with one prime lens or one pancake zoom lens. I love 25mm lens (50mm in 35mm/full frame equivalent) and usually that what I use. Or if I wanted to go manual, I'll pack a vintage 50mm lens. Aside from camera and lens, of course I will also pack a spare batteries, and water bottle (very very important).

Feedback

Look around and keep an eye to ordinary objects that are usually not noticed by other people. Open your mind, free yourself from pressure to capture 'great photo', and just let your heart and instinct tell you to capture something. Many time, doing so did surprise me after all :)
