Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Pari Island, one among many beautiful islands in the Seribu Island off the Jakarta Bay. I can't really remember where exactly I take this photo. But it was near a patch of mangrove during high tide. It was at the corner of the islands that only locals know, so there were no tourists here to disturb my photo-taking session.

Time

Well, needless to say, it was taken during sunset. To be honest, at that time, I wasn't thinking of taking any landscape/seascape photo because I just returned form fieldwork. But seeing the sunset looks amazing, I quickly take out my camera and snap a picture.

Lighting

Before I got this image, I was just walking back from the boat after fieldwork. But seeing the sky was clear with some clouds, and since the color was beautiful, I decided to take time to capture it. Initially, the shot looks boring with nothing on the foreground or background. But after walking around for a few minutes, I found a low-hanging dead branch of a mangrove tree that would be a perfect foreground object and a natural frame in my image.

Equipment

This was taken a long time ago with my Canon 500D DSLR and an 18-55mm kit lens. Unfortunately, I didn't bring any additional gears, like tripod or filters, so it was not possible to take a long shutter shot. So this was taken on a handheld. As a note, that DSLR still survive until today and still actively used in my laboratory.

Inspiration

I think I remember seeing a photo like this somewhere in a website and with that in mind, I move to capture this photo. Again, I didn't feel quite satisfied at that time, and to be honest, even today, I don't think this is a great photo. But I guess some people do like this, and I am happy because of that. I kind of hope this photo could inspire others.

Editing

Yes. Post-processed in Adobe Lightroom with my own custom-made preset. I do have presets from other people or companies, like VSCO or RNI, but I usually use them as a base tone for editing, before setting off with my own preset based on those ready-made presets.

In my camera bag

Now, since this is a landscape/seascape photo, usually, I will pack a weather-sealed camera and lens combo. At that time, I admit EOS 500D and 18-55mm kit lens was not the best combo I have. But, hey, I did prove that it could be used to create a good image, right? Currently, I use combination of Olympus OM-D E-M1 mark.i and M. Zuiko Pro 12-40mm f/2.8. You might not believe that those combos could fit in a very small camera bag, along with spare batteries and compact cleaning tools (microfiber cloth, lenspen), but it did! For tripod, I use Manfrotto Befree tripod. It's compact, relatively light, and quite sturdy for a travelling tripod. I also pack a set of Cokin Creative Filter System, which contain ND filter (several grades), ND Grad (soft) and ND Grad (hard) to balance the lighting and to obtain slow shutter speed in the presence of direct sunlight during sunset/sunrise.

Feedback

Now, Pari Island is a hidden gem for a nature photographer. I kid you not. There are some spots that are amazing and generally devoid of people, especially, tourists. Just talk with the locals a lot and be friendly with them. They will gladly show you around and might help you take your picture.
