Location
This was taken in the summer of 2016 at the Soul Of Summer concert held in Fayetteville, Ga.Time
I can't remember the exact time but I do know it was shortly after sunset.Lighting
Nothing special, just stage and spot lights used at most concerts.Equipment
This shot was captured with a Nikon D7100, handheld, and a Nikon 70-200 2.8.Inspiration
This amazing musician, dubbed The Mad Violinist (Ashanti Floyd), was the concert headliner. His music, and his energy, was all the inspiration needed to capture this shot and many others. He was absolutely shredding his bow and catching him at a moment of pause near his face, essentially framing his eye, was a matter of timing his motions and being fortunate that the ever changing lighting spotlighted his face.Editing
Post processing was done in Lightroom. I pulled down the darks and shadows to eliminate some haze from other lights. I also brought up the small amount of light and highlights to accent the hat detail, the light falling on his face, and the light on the mic.In my camera bag
The Nikon 70-200 2.8 I used in this shot was a rental lens. I shoot with the Nikon D7100. I keep 3 lenses, the Nikon 50mm 1.8, a Sigma 17-50mm 2.8 for more close quarters shots (I do a lot of on location in limited space), and a Nikon 85mm 1.8. I also keep a Yongnuo YN568EX flash, a couple of Yongnuo triggers, an Illuminati light meter, and a pack of Rosco gels (mainly for color correction). Always keep at least 1 spare camera battery, spare batteries for the flash, and lens cleaning supplies.Feedback
Patience is definitely a virtue. When shooting a concert, definitely pay attention to the idiosyncrasies of the artist i.e. what side of the stage they prefer, when they are most expressive, or do they move around a lot. In the shot I noticed on certain bowing motions he would pause at the top. I eventually timed this enough to get this shot. Patience, timing, and attention to detail are a must in concert shooting.
