Ontario’s first European Community, Sainte-Marie among the Hurons was the headquarters for the French Jesuit Mission to the Huron Wendat people. In 1639, the Jesuits, along with French lay workers, began construction of a fenced community that included barracks, a church, workshops, residences, and a sheltered area for Native visitors.
In 1649, Sainte-Marie among the Hurons no longer existed when members of the mission community were forced to abandon and burn their home of nearly ten years. It took less than one hour to burn down to nothing but ashes. The missionaries chose to burn the mission rather than risk it being desecrated or permanently overrun by Iroquois in further attacks.
Sainte-Marie among the Hurons is now recreated on its original site in Midland, Ontario where the mission’s compelling story is brought to life.

Wow, fantastic thinking for this capture. The window frames the outer view so well. Excellent detail and exposure Cher. Thank you for giving us the History of Sainte-Marie among the Hurons - such an interesting time in our History!! 1639!! almost difficult to imagine!! How heartbreaking it must have been for the Missionaries to have to burn their settlement - one day I hope to see this amazing place - such an important 'slice' of Canadian History!!

Fantastic view-of-life image, Cher! I want to be there to see it. Fascinating history, too. Eliot Pattison has a wonderful series about this time in history. Love this! :)

Location
This photograph was taken at Sainte-Marie among the Hurons in Midland, Ontario. After extensive archaeological and historical research, Sainte-Marie among the Hurons is now recreated on its original site, where the mission’s compelling story is brought to life with costumed historical interpreters and activities.Time
The photograph was taken around 1:00 p.m.Lighting
The lighting was slightly overcast but I still feel that the lighting inside or lack thereof made for a better photograph with the light outside.Equipment
I used my Canon camera which was hand held. I do not have expensive camera equipment nor do I believe that you need to have an expensive camera to capture beautiful or amazing photographs. The camera does not take the photographs … the photographer does.Inspiration
Taking this photograph through the window gave me a sense of the trials and tribulations of what it would have been like back in time.Editing
I did not do any post-processing on this photograph except to crop it a bit.In my camera bag
In my camera bag I carry my Canon camera, extra batteries, various filters, lens filter cleaner and extra memory cards.Feedback
I believe that every photograph should tell a story, so make your photograph tell a story. Photography changes the way you see things. You notice colours, textures, people, nature … everything around you looks different when you start to see the world through a lens. Have fun and enjoy doing what you love doing, which is taking photographs. Don’t follow your dreams … chase them!
