Behind The Lens

Location

I took this at a friends wedding in Hexham.

Time

I took this photo at 3.40 in the afternoon

Lighting

This was shot just using natural light

Equipment

I used an Olympus OMD EM10 with the 45mm prime lense. The lense itself is cheap for a prime and produces some amazing pictures

Inspiration

I was at a friends wedding. I was, and still am relatively new to photography. The kids were playing in the field with toy guns, chasing each other around, which was great to see as too often kids these days spent too much time on technology. I got myself into a decent position and fired off a few shots and got really lucky with this one.

Editing

Again, I'm quite new to photography and was just getting to grips with Lightroom. I dropped the highlights and increased the shadows then got the whites and blacks where I wanted them. Then I messed around with split toning and white balance. That gave it almost a painting like effect which I felt really suited the image.

In my camera bag

Olympus OMD EM10 with 17.5mm 45mm and a 75-300mm I now also carry a Nikon D610 with a 35mm fixed lens. I use a manfrotto tripod, but mostly I enjoy the freedom of shooting hand held.

Feedback

I'm really quite new to this, but the one piece of advice I'd give is keep it natural. This shot wasn't staged. All the elements were already there. (Countryside, kids dressed in their best clothes, a few toys for them to play with) The kids just did their own thing. I didn't have to direct them. It took a lot of shots but eventually I got the picture.
