The photo was taken outside in my garden.Time
This photo which I really love myself, was taken in June at 19.02 on a sunny day. I love sunny days, because I love making pics with back light. The advantage of back light is that you will get a black background, so this makes the flower shine. Afterwards I edit my picture. Sometimes the background is not really black, so I change that so that all the attention goes to the flower.Lighting
I said already something about lighting. I love making backlight pics. If people say: no, it is too sunny today, I say, oh yes, great, it is sunny, lets go outside. I love to take pics of flowers, but I also do the same thing with butterflies and insects, which is also one of my passions.Equipment
I take always pictures manually, so that I can control the light myself. I make the photo's always something darker than it should be, e.g. -1. Later on you can decide if you leave them, to get a special atmosphere, or you have to lighten it a little. You can do that if you make your pics darker than normal, if you make the too light, you miss too many pixels and dont get the desired result.Inspiration
I love sunflowers a lot. I have many and many of pics, but in this case, I was just looking for the right place instead of the right flower, because my garden is full of flowers, but not everywhere in the garden the sun is shining, because of the location of my garden, the north side. So, I was lucky that this one was standing in the sun.Editing
I took care that the black background was black everywere and lightened the yellow part a little bit. Thats all.In my camera bag
At that time I had my Sony SLT-A77V, with macro lens 1:1. The advantage of this lens, is that you also can make landscapes with it. But in fact for landscapes I prefer my 18-200 lens. At this moment I shoot with a Son7 7R, with 24-240 lens plus my macro lens: 90 mm. I carry with me both lenses and a bean back. With my new camera I can have my ISO on 1000 if I want, nice for shooting mushrooms and insects which are in the shadow. I hardly ever take my tripod with me.Feedback
Take your time to see whether your subject is in the right place at the right sunny time. It does not have to be midday, but can also in the summer much later, every light source is good. Always make your pics darker and lighten them up later if necessary, or lighten them up partly, so put your camera on te Manual stand. You an choose to lower your F or to put your ISO higher. Always look at the camera settings before shooting. When that has been done, you can do the shooting for all flowers on theses settings. I never shoot when my shutter time is slower than 1/80. Is that the case, I put my ISO higher, but not change my Aperture because that gives a totally different result.
