Location
This was captured near the Wascana Valley Trails in SE Saskatchewan, Canada - the Canadian Prairies.Time
The late afternoon on this particular day (this was around 4pm). Afternoon thunderstorms were rolling though.Lighting
The storm cell is left of camera with the leading edge creeping into the frame. To the right of the frame was sunlight and mostly clear skies. This particular view gave a nice combination of both the sunlight and the darker, more dramatic clouds. I also love the still visible sunlight in the grass and naturally lit subjects (barn and post).Equipment
Nikon D810 and Nikkor 14-24mm lens handheld. This is my typical landscape camera and lens combination for the wide open skies and field of the prairies.Inspiration
I just loved the position and lighting of the grass, the post and barn. In combination with the approaching storm and still visible sunlight, I felt this would be a super composition.Editing
I almost always sharpen my RAW images. I also worked on with curves, brightness and detail on post to bring out the detail and drama I wanted in this image. In my camera bag
For a day of storms like this, I had my 14-24mm, 24-70mm and a 28-300mm lenses. I also carried cleaning equipment, especially if rain got onto the lens. I always shoot with a lens hood on, but the wind can get pretty wild on the open prairie, especially with some storms around. My goal at this time of day is all handheld shooting, so no tripod or other gear to slow me down. Lots of spare batteries.Feedback
Be careful out in the open when there are storms! I am not a storm chaser, but I love to photograph the landscape when the clouds have lots of interest. I was not going for lightening shots, so I tried to stay a little further from the storm, and capture the cloud as a background. Look for a nice mix of light on a day like this, especially on your subjects.
