This photo was taken at my town's high school senior prom pre-gathering at a local lake clubhouse. My daughter's friend asked me to come and photograph her on this exciting day. I love capturing the feeling of a moment in candid shots. Just the looks on their faces exudes the excitement of this special day and milestone in a teenager's life and also the awe and wonder of what's next. The end of high school and the beginning of a new chapter in life.Time
The time of day was around 4pm which was a nice time to shoot as there was not a lot of glare from the sun.Lighting
It was a beautiful, partly cloudy day. Since it was late afternoon, the sun was not harsh. The illumination of the subjects was just right as a cloud passed over the sun.Equipment
This was shot with a Nikon D90 18-105mm 1:3.5-5.6G ED. No flash or other equipment was used.Inspiration
I was invited to photograph my daughter's friend at her senior prom. She has always liked my photography as I used to photograph her and my daughter during the years they were varsity cheerleaders. I always captured creative shots of the team during football games and cheer competitions. My inspiration was just the thought that I wanted to capture what these young ladies were feeling in that day, in that moment with a single photo.Editing
I didn't do any fancy editing on this photo other than converting it to black and white via I-photo editing on my Mac.In my camera bag
I have 2 Nikons. A D90 and a D40. My D40 has a macro lens which I always carry with me when I'm out hiking or at the botanical gardens since photographing insects is my favorite hobby. I have a uni-pod which comes in handy for taking a steady shot with the macro lens. I recently got a Sony A6000 Mirrorless camera which is another great camera that takes beautiful quality photos.Feedback
I would say.... to get a good "in the moment" candid shot, be patient. You may have to take 100 shots before you capture "the" shot. Try taking shots at different angles. Stand on a chair and shoot from above. Kneel down and shoot from below. Lay across a table..... haha. An awkward angle may capture the light and your subject/s in the perfect way that could make your photo standout or unique. Think outside the box, be creative.
