Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken at a nearby fishingpond, away from the city but near the villages Aarle Rixtel and Bakel (the Netherlands), It was a place I scouted some days ahead of the night of the super blood moon. I needed a dark spot, with a beautiful scenery, but easy reachable. Well, I found it, and we drove there a few hours before the eclipse occured.

Time

It was just before midnight when we arrived, under a full moon that set the scenery in a beautiful blueish light. After I did setup my camera's we waited for about eight hours and watched the eclipse. I took a photo every six minutes during that time. The other camera captured over 1000 frames that would be used for a timelapse. It can be found in my blog http://www.nandoonline.com/?p=4449 (Dutch)

Lighting

Well, it is dark with a lot of light pollution and the light of a full Moon of course. The image of the landscape is taken during the totality of the eclipse, to have a dark landscape and a sky full of stars. And of course the red moon. All other images are taken during the eclipse with a longer focal distance. The landscape is about 20 seconds and ISO1600 to capture the stars. The images of the Moon are taken with ISO100 untill ISO800, depending on the amount of shadow on the moon. I played around with it to keep the shutterspeed high enough to prevent motion blur. All images of the Moon are projected in the landscape image, corresponding the trajectory of the Moon across the sky during the eclipse.

Equipment

I used a Canon EOS 5D mark III on a Gitzo GT3542LS and a Really Right Stuff BH-55. I used a EF15mm f/2,8 fisheye for the landscape shot and the EF100-400 f/4-5,6L II IS for the individual moon shots

Inspiration

I took a similar photo back in 2007 (http://www.nandoonline.com/?p=4434) from my backyard. I liked the image but the scenery wasn't that beautiful. This was a second chance to redo the image from 2007 but with the experience of eight years digital photography. That is why I searched for the perfect spot and hoped for a clear night. Well, we got lucky. And except a night to remember I was happy to see the image go viral... almost.

Editing

There was a lot of post processing involved. I had to optimize the main image of the landscape and to adjust the colors in such a way the light pollution was at it minimal. Next I had to import the individual Moon images, resize them all and place them in the line of the movement of the Moon. I also had to take care of the reflection in the water, of which the original super blood moon is real, and all the other copied, from the individual Moon images. A littlebit of water movement made the projections real enought. The fog is real, but a little bit enhanced.

In my camera bag

For these night shots I take mostly two camera's, a Canon EOS 1Dx and a EOS 5D mark III. I have a EF24-70mm f/2,8L II and a EF 15mm f/2,8 fisheye. Sometimes I take a TS-E 17mm f/4L with me to get a little more wide angle. Of course remote controls, two tripods (Gitzo GT 3542LS and a 3LT EVO 3 VYV) and a lens heater to keep the condensation away.

Feedback

Know where you want to take the pictures. Explore the site, make sure where you need to be. Never go alone, but take someone with you. It is less lonely. Take a chair to sit on. Make sure the camera is already adjusted for night shots before you leave home. Know your camera and take only the stuff with you that you need. Too much stuff is unnecessary and you always have the risk to loose something in the dark. For a picture like mine, you need to have a plan and stick to it. Better to have an extra shot, than missing one.
