Location
This photo was taken at the beach of Saksun, an almost abandoned village on the Faroër Islands. It used to be a natural harbour until a fierce storm filled the fjord with sand rendering it useless for ships.Time
It was during low tide an hour before sunset when I reached the beach. It was raining and I was the only one there at that time. The light of the setting sun managed to bring some colour when the rain stopped for a few minutes.Lighting
The light at the horizon came as a surprise since it had been raining during the three quarter of an hour hike to reach this beach. Then I noticed the amazing lines in the sand. It was as if everything came together at that moment.Equipment
I used a Canon EOS 5D mark IV with a EF 16-35mm f/2,8L III at 16mm. I used a two stops soft gradient filter regardless of the raindrops that continuously fell on the filter. The image was shot from tripod that I had to hold due to the strong winds.Inspiration
I was looking for these kind of lines in the sandy beach. At first I was a bit disappointed with the thick clouds and rain but when I found this amazing spot it was the struggle against the water more than worth it.Editing
Due to the rain it was not possible to make an exposure stack so I had to process this image from a single RAW file. Fortunatly I did use a two stops gradient filter. Post processing in this image consists of fine tuning the white balance, exposure gradients and local contrast on different parts of the image. In my camera bag
I use a Canon digital SLR with a wide angle zoom like 16-35 or 24-70, and a telezoom like a 70-200 or a 100-400, depending on the location I am at. And of course a tripod. For this trip I carried a Gitzo traveller tripod, but I should have carried a larger and heavier one due to the weather situation on the Faroër IslandsFeedback
Don't let the rain hold you from photographing. Use appropriate clothing and protection for the rain and go out. Sometimes you have to wait a bit, but when you are patience, carry a cleaning cloth in your bag for the rain drops, the result can be better than expected.
