Location
This image of the famous Whitby Abbey was taken by the rear entrance to the site which is located in the car park.Time
When in Whitby I nearly always aim to be at the abbey at sunset. It was November 10th at 15:54 when I got this shot, thankfuly the sun goes down early on these cold evenings.Lighting
Evening light at Whitby comes from the direction of the old town and tends to light the abbey nicely. I was pleased about the clouds because they dulled the sunset a little and I think they give a little more depth to the shot.Equipment
A Nikon D7100 and kit 18-105 lens was used to get this shot.Inspiration
Its hard not to be inspired by the abbey at most times of the day. It is as if the Augustine monks built it here for the light, who knows this may have been the case. The grounds show the isolation and the stone just seems to glow at sunset. Because of it location the abbey is set against the sky which help show the wonderful detail of the building.Editing
This was shot as a RAW file so things like shadows, clarity, white and black points, contrast and temperature have been adjusted. Also there has been some minor colour tweaks but nothing too dramatic. In my camera bag
Depending on where I am going my kit will change but as a general rule I will carry my camera body (either the D7100 or D600), 50mm 1.8, 105mm micro, 18-105mm or 24-85 and 70-200 2.8. Also in my bay will be at least one strobe some gels and pocket wizards along with shutter release, batteries, light meter and some Lee Stopper filters. Strapped to the back of my back pack will be my Manfrotto 055 and ball head.Feedback
Whitby is such a picturesque place it is hard to come away without a shot that is pleasing no matter what the weather is. Be prepared for a lot of walking as Whitby is in a valley and if you park at the north side of Whitby you have the famous 199 steps to get up to the abbey. Arrive early enjoy the town and scout where you want to take your sunset shot. It is such a popular place for photography you will find it hard to get an original angle so just find what you like and enjoy your time there. At sunset be patient don't pack up when the sun is down as there will be more to come.
