Behind The Lens

Location

This is the Angle Oak Tree on Johns Island, SC. Just outside of Charleston.

Time

This was taken in the late afternoon. I had to actually sit and wait for the other visitors to thin out before I could get a shot of the tree without a crowd.

Lighting

I wanted to catch the late afternoon sun to create a dramatic look, and be able to highlight the details of the large branches.

Equipment

Shot with a Canon 5D Mark III and Canon EF 70-200 2.8L IS II USM My first choice would have been my Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS II USM, but I left it in the hotel! However, when you go for a wider shot there are many other trees that will be in your view on each side. So shooting this at 70mm actually worked out.

Inspiration

The Angel Oak has been on my photography bucket list for some time. In March of 2015 I went to Charleston, SC for a week. This was on the top of my to do list. I love shooting trees, and especially one that are shaped different or have that something extra. There are varying accounts as to the actual age of this tree, but it is at the very least 500 years old. Some reports say 1500 years old. I actually went there twice during my trip. Just to sit there and take it all in, and experience the magic of that special tree.

Editing

The post processing was very minimal. I used Nik Silver Efex and small amount of contrast adjustment in Lightroom.

In my camera bag

I have a Canon 5D Mark III, 7D Mark II, Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS II USM, Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM, Canon EF 70-200 2.8L IS II USM and Canon EF 100-400 4/5-5.6L IS USM.

Feedback

There are always a lot of people here. Best to be there at opening time in the morning, or wait out the late afternoon just before closing. This tree and the property now belong to the Park Service (thankfully), so they have it fenced in and there is a small office there.
