Behind The Lens

Location

I captured this image in Forrest Place, Perth Western Australia.

Time

It was around lunchtime on an overcast, winters day.

Lighting

All the light is natural disbursed light from heavy cloud cover.

Equipment

I used my Nikon D7000 with a Nikkor 35mm prime and a variable ND filter. For a tripod I used the GorillaPod Focus.

Inspiration

I wanted to blur the fountain water and thought the little girl was also an interesting subject. I moved several times and took several shots to get this image.

Editing

I only processed in Adobe Camera Raw to balance colour and contrast. I then cropped slightly to tweak the composition.

In my camera bag

I often simply just take my camera and one lens on my city walks. On this day I planned on using the ND filter so I also packed a gorilla pod. It's easy to setup on a bench or step and is stable enough for just about any style of shooting. I don't have a lot of gear, but what I do have I get the most out of it. I always carry my Nikon D7000. For lenses I pack the Nikkor 35mm or 18-105mm or sometimes a Tokina 11-16mm. For tripods, I find the GorillaPod Focus to be excellent - it straps neatly to my PackSafe shoulder bag. The rest of my kit is just cleaning and cables not too worthy of a mention.

Feedback

Play around with exposure times. You'll quickly find the shutter speed that gives you what you need in terms of effects. This image was a 1/5s exposure to give the water some texture and still retain most of the detail of the little girl. I used ISO100 and an aperture of f22. This combined with the ND filter gave me good detail in the marble and the blur effect that makes this image so interesting.
