My daughter and I took a trip to Lesmurdie Falls late in the afternoon. I thought I would miss the light but we made it in time to get 30 minutes of shooting before the light completely faded. It was worth the trip to come home to developed shots like this.

Behind The Lens

Location

Lesmirdie Falls, Western Australia

Time

Late afternoon but before golden hour. The shadow of the valley provide some low ambient light.

Lighting

All natural, long exposure. Because of the low ambient light, I was able to use just a circular polarising filter to achieve a few seconds long exposure to capture this shot.

Equipment

I used my 35mm prime, D7000 Nikon mounted on a large Gorilla Pod and a circular polarising filter.

Inspiration

I wanted to experiment with longer exposures and capture water flowing over rocks.

Editing

I edited out one weed that was disrupting the flow on thev lower right. Other than that, mainly contrast and highlights.

In my camera bag

A selection of basic lenses: 35mm prime (DX), 10-24mm and 18-105mm. My D7000 body. A gorilla pod with ball-mount. 100x100 Filters: 3, 10 and 3grad. Some cleaning equipment.

Feedback

Experiment! There are no rules except to achieve a long exposure and stable image. Use some filters or a single polarising filter and low ambient light.
