The inaugural Doughty Valley Steam Days was held in 2000, the year we bought the property that would become our homestead. I attended that year over in Steam Valley, but the next year, a Case 110 steam traction engine exploded at the Medina County Fairgrounds, killing five people, and I got freaked out. For the past 15 years, I've listened to the whistles and watched the spark show from my porch overlooking the valley. This year, I decided to dispense with my fears, take up my camera, and head over to the show with my husband and daughters. It was hot and muggy, but the light was amazing. The engines busily demonstrated grain threshing, shingle-making, tractor-pulling, and sawmilling, and just plain showing off and looking handsome. This machine is a 25-horse-power New Huber, built in Marion, Ohio in 1910. It's operated by a local young Amish man.
