Saltpans near "ria Formosa" protected area, Tavira (Algarve), Portugal.
The traditional saltpans of the Natural Park of Ria Formosa are of centenarian artificial biotope. Located in areas of medium to high marshland, they are bprepared and maintained by men, hence practicing sustainable economy of the traditional sea salt. The pink color of the water is due to the abundant presence of micro-algae called Dunaliella.
