Location
It was taken at Vandenberg Air Force Base in Central Coast California.Time
I really love this photo. It is my favorite one! I took this photo on a cloudy morning at around 9:30.Lighting
The sky was beautiful that morning with the sun half-peeking behind the cumulus clouds. I decided to convert the image into black and white. Low and behold, it completely placed the background sky at par with the foreground train track. The contrast between darkness and brightness of the clouds created a more dramatic photo.Equipment
I used a Canon T1i with a Canon 18-55 mm lens. I wanted to get really close to the ground so I decided not to use a tripod.Inspiration
I wanted the viewer to experience the whole image starting from the foreground (train track), to the midground (hills and calm ocean), and all the way to the background (cloudy sky). I used the symmetrical lines of the track to draw the viewers' eyes and provide them with a 3D experience.Editing
I usually take pictures in Raw and use Lightroom to polish the basic details of the image (i.e. contrast, exposure, shadow, brightness, and noise) The initial photo didn't really pop out in color so I converted it to black and white. In my camera bag
I carry a Canon T1i. It's a crop sensor camera, but it's really light and easy to carry around. I love it! I also carry three Canon EFS lenses (10-18mm,18-55mm, and 55-250mm). These lenses are about all I need to shoot landscapes.Feedback
If you feel that your photo doesn't quite stick out, try converting it to black and white. I usually take photos in color, but before I let go of some images I dislike, I switch them to black and white to see if I could bring out the texture and detail of the image. I am so glad I gave this photo a second chance!
