This tree stands in the middle of Mammoth Hot Spring in Yellowstone National Park. It is surrounded by white [living] limestone. The sediment rises in the hot spring-water and will eventually settle (like a drop of water on an icicle). If that weren't enough to kill the tree, two bacteria live within the hot water. The wild animals don't drink the water because they know it makes them sick, so as the tree naturally sucked up nutrients like soil and water, the limestone and bacteria eventually killed it. This is a single toned exposure.
