This photo was taken at my home in Grand Blanc, MI on my back deck, It is actually a tiny wildflower which I plant seeds in pots in the spring to attract hummingbirds, butterflies and bees.Time
I took this photo around dusk. Usually the sun is shining very bright on the deck in the mid afternoon so I waited until around dusk so I wouldn't have too much light to contend with.Lighting
I find that if I wait until around dusk to take pictures or wait until I have of a more cloudy day I get a truer color. It's just much easier to work without the sun's glare working against me. Of course, sometimes, I need the sun for shadowy pictures or pictures that I want a reflection..Equipment
To take this photo I used my NIkon D3200 camera on manual focus, I don't believe I used my flash. I try not too. I feel that I get a more natural look without a flash. The lens I used is a Micro Nikkor 85 mm. I use this lens quite often taking pictures of flowers, insects and sometimes my cats and dogs.Inspiration
I love taking pictures of flowers and at different times of the days. The close ups I get are amazing to me because of the different textures that the lens picks up from the flower.Editing
I did quite a bit of post-processing with this picture. That's what makes this picture look so unique. I made the picture black and white and then put the color back into the flower. Plus I burned and dodged some of the flower. Plus, I added the sun and the rays.In my camera bag
When I travel I carry all of my equipment with me. Recently, I bought a backpack type camera bag that holds all of my lenses, (5), camera, tripod, laptop and all of my supplies for cleaning the camera and the lenses. But for just a quick trip on a hike I carry a much smaller bag with maybe 2 lenses. Usually the Micro lens and my zoom lens.Feedback
My only advice I give to anyone wanting to do photography of nature is to take your camera everywhere. You never know what you are going to see or run into. Most people just look at things. I look at things and try to figure out how I can turn that into a great photo. I have been told I have an "eye" for photography. All I know is I am having a lot of fun and it's great having others enjoy what I do.
