Location
This photo was taken in a field beside Mont St-Bruno Provincial Park in Quebec. This white butterfly was flitting between a set of flowers. While the shot looks simple, the trick was to take rapid-fire shots as the butterfly approached the flower. You can imagine the wings flapping rapidly, so the optimum shot was at the point in wing movement when they change direction. At that instant in time, they appear frozen in air with little blur.Time
This was taken around 10AM when the haze has not set itLighting
This was a sunny day so good natural lighting at my backEquipment
A Canon 70D camera with a Tamron 18-270 zoom lens. The camera was hand held, but being in rapid-fire mode the later shots have less camera shake caused by pressing the shutter button.Inspiration
I had never tried to capture a butterfly that was in the air and about to land. The extra condition I was looking for, which I believe makes this shot special is that moment in time when the wings appear frozen in the air.Editing
Minor sharpening, otherwise no processing. In my camera bag
The equipment mentioned above, plus a Canon L-Series 400mm zoom lens and doubler. All total, this is less that 10 pounds of camera gear in my backpack.Feedback
Be creative and open your eyes while walking in nature. This was an example of me having taken several butterfly shots (see my gallery), but none while they were flying.
